After all my resolve, I still prove to be a horribly apathetic blogger. I have to admit, facebook has gotten the better of me. Its just so easy. I don't have to write anything. And with so many friends/viewers, it gives instant gratification. Poor reasoning indeed.

Jeremy has been doing some great photography of late. He is getting set up to do portraits of people (a couple flashes with reflector umbrellas and such), and even has his first gig taking holiday pictures of my cousin Caroline and her adorable family this Sunday.

I don't have all his pictures on my computer, but I'll post some pictures taken from last weekend; we spent it in Seattle with Jeremy's cousin Lyndsay and her husband Scott.

So Long Sweet Summer...

A return at last to blog world. There are no pictures for this entry, that I will tell you immediately. But there will be soon. Jeremy purchased his much desired 40D canon this summer and spent many of his afternoons, evenings and weekends photographing southern Oregon wildlife in their natural habitat. He also documented our many happy summer family reunion, camping, swimming and hiking events. I'll try to upload a healthy smattering of all of these pleasant things asap.

Meanwhile, here is a mini update: Jeremy and I are back in our second place of habitation, the rainy town of Portland. This time we are renting an apartment in a cool old Victorian house a block from PSU campus, and across the street (help us all) from McMinnimins. This location is much more convenient than last year's, so we are pleased.

We are happy to have Tyler and Kelsey (my brother and his wife) living up here too this year. They live in Scappoose, where Kate and Phil live too, so Jerms and I spend a lot of time out there. Jeremy and I were also asked to help out with Branches church youth group that just started up last week, Venue. We happily accepted and are excited to become a part of that on Saturday evenings.

As far as schooling goes, I am continuing to make headway on my graphic design degree, and will most likely graduate Spring '10. Jeremy is still taking art classes and is putting out his feelers for either transfering to PNCA to get a specific photography degree or switching majors at PSU with an applied arts degree (...a new degree PSU came up with for photography). Happy!

Since there's probably no one still reading this, I'll sign off until I have some visual candy to tempt and please the peoples eyes.

Moving

Good News! This morning, at 8am, Jeremy had his last art final critique for the term. He showed his amazing much larger than life roll-of-film sculpture.

I make fun, but it's actually really cool.

All of his art projects for the term are still at school. I'll try to take some pictures and post them sometime soon. My last final is Thursday morning, and then we are blowing this joint and heading for fresh air and family.

Meanwhile our home for the previous 9 months is in complete disarray. I was going to take pictures of our second home to remember it by, before I tore it all apart. Unfortunately, just as is what happened with our first home, I forgot before I had done too much damage to properly document the place. So instead, here's some pictures of the mess:

Now, If I had a cool critical eye on the media, (here-to-fore known as carrie's blog and pictures) I would notice the large amounts of product placement in the above pictures. Notice: the Hefty bags. And all sorts of hard alcoholic beverages which Jeremy and I did not personally imbibe.

Maybe I'm a freak of nature, but I kind of like the whole moving process. Well. I like the packing process. I like to dig into the inner-most recesses of cupboards and closets, dig out the junk that was hiding in the dark and put it in its place. If that place happens to be the trash, all the better. Throw it away! Organize it! Put it in boxes! Lets Clean! Clean! Clean!

...The part I do not love, is deep cleaning yucky crevaces with mold in them. The other part I do not love is fighting with Jeremy about how to go about packing a vehicle. An excellent trait I got from my beloved father. :D

Jeremy also has been making trips to the local u-pull: the very place he found the volvo window to replace our own broken one earlier this spring. He made one trip this morning to find a Isuzu Trooper window to replace the one his smashed last winter trying to tow brother-in-law Philip out of the snowbank.
... What I love most about that last sentence is that if (and when) the two men in question read that statement they would/will both have adendums to add. Silly men. You got stuck in a snowbank. You broke your window. There's nothing else to say.

Returning to subject at hand. Jeremy is currently off on his second trip to the u-pull today, because his first trip he didn't have the proper tools to go about removing said window. He did however purchase a stereo from a kid hawking them in the u-pull parking lot. It could very well have been the very kid who broke our window and stole our old stereo; Jeremy said he had a suspicious amount of stereos and sound systems in the back of his vehicle. So Jeremy bought one for 30 dollars, but since he didn't have cash, offered to put thirty dollars of gas in the kids tank. It was accepted.

At least we wern't directly funding anyone's drug habits.

The Beach

Another week closer to the end of the term. Ah, freedom; so close and yet so far.

Jeremy and I did go to the beach-- Cannon Beach and Astoria-- with Kate and Phil last weekend. It was amazing good fun. Here's a few pictures we took... mostly in a coffee shop in Astoria, because even though we spent time on the beach and strolling through art galleries and book shops, we really only took pictures there and also in the mariners museum. (which is super cool... if you're ever there you should visit it.)

In other news, Jeremy re-chipped his left front tooth last night. We had a few good laughs, I informed him he absolutely had to get it fixed before we returned home for the summer. He agreed and promptly super-glued his chip back into his tooth (before I could get pictures. sorry friends.) At Lunch time he reported it was still going strong. I'm still demanding a visit to the school dentist.

Jeremy and I are shocked and horrified at the current gas prices (4.10 at the local station). And after discussing our economy's seemingly doomed fate, we have decided we're going to learn how to live off the land this summer. (That means we're going to read books about it... not do it. yet.) So that when it all goes down, we will be well fed and happy little farmers.

Moving craze has started. I'm on the lookout for free boxes. Last Thursday we cruised behind Safeway, Target and Staples and collected what was available. My next stop will be the liquor store. They have an amazing amount of boxes and don't put locks on their recycle bins like most of the other stores.

Nothing else is remotely interesting about our life right now.

Today is one of our last rainy Sundays in Portland for the summer. We are--as we so often are-- camped out at my sister Kate and her husband Phil's house; Jeremy...

...alternately working on his final print project and browsing the web for camera goods and me...

...trying to comprehend the eccentricities of photoshop (cursed of all programs) and studying up for my skills test on Tuesday.

It's been so long since the last post. School demands have gotten the better of me; we have still been doing fun things though. Last weekend Jeremy and I went to the annual IPD garage sale... which is basically a Volvo specialist company that puts on a car show and discounts their merchandise for the weekend. I have to say it marks a change in my appreciation for Jeremy's pet project. So we went and looked at all the pretty Volvos and purchased a new muffler system... Here's a sampling of the smorgasbord:

This weekend Jeremy and I went to the Zoo on the morning of what ended up being a rather nice (sunny) Saturday. They had a fun dinosaur exhibit (almost real life quality. ha.) and a cute bird show too. Mostly Jeremy took video footage of the animals, so we only got one amazing picture of me mimicking the pose of a prehistoric statue.

It was a great little excursion, though I have to say when nap time rolled around I was more than ready to give up my plans of motherhood... I saw more than one fit of furious rage come from the masses of toddlers gathered. I don't think it's very nice of parents to bring their kids to the zoo on a hot crowded day.

My sister and I sang a special and helped lead worship in the Branches church today. A week ago today marked my final gig with Tiffany. Another girl she's been playing with, Melanie Rae, joined us so we had three part harmonies, which is always fun. Here's a picture of the three of us...

That pretty much concludes the general highlights of our life lately. Tomorrow being a holiday, me might cruise over to the coast with Kate and Phil if the weather doesn't look too ugly. We're really looking forward to heading back down to Southern Oregon for the summer. Jeremy has some construction jobs lined up with his dad and I have a job doing trail maintenance up at Crater Lake. Both of us have plans that involve a boat and a board.

And wow, we're so ready for the Southern Oregon sunshine.

Another Hike, A Couple Surprises

After homework, chores and a yummy coffee cake, we went on a hike today up at Angels Rest. It's getting so pretty around here. All kinds of new bright green flora and a healthy first little batch of fauna; bumble bees, butterflies, bunnies and more.

The first surprise of the day came in the form of a pile of creepy garter snakes. Ugh. No matter how well I know in my logical adult mind that these snakes are harmless, I always jump when I see them. And looking at the pictures gives me goosebumps and the inability to leave my feet on the ground. Go figure. You can view a couple of them below:

Reasons for why they were in a pile may possibley include a) sunning themselves and b)the event of a mating ball. Though they slithered off when we started taking pictures of them, by the time we hiked back down they were relocated.

Our hike was ended with one more surprise. This one brought on by a human version of vultures, whose booty today happened to be our stereo. Ours was one of two cars with smashed windows. Documentation of our poor injured Volvo:

Such a bummer. We reported it to the police, and both they and other hikers we encountered informed us that this stuff-- people breaking into cars for stuff to hawk for drug money--is getting more and more common out I-84, along the Gorge. Ironically enough, the Oregonian published an article on the problem today.Too many travelors, not enough seeing eyes.

Sunday's Gig

As some of you may know, I (Carrie) have been playing gigs pretty regularly with another acoustic singer/songwriter, Tiffany Carlson. She's from Oregon City, and we do most of our gigs there (only 25 min from our house) since she already had her foot in the door in a couple places when I first moved up. Last weekend we played at a fun little pub called The Highland Stillhouse, where we play every third Sunday of the month. Here's some pictures from the night.

Tomorrow, (Thursday) we have a gig at a place called The Eastburn, at 9pm. Its a little more downtown Portland, and its shorter, so Jeremy is going to come too. (He doesn't usually hang out for the three hours most gigs are.) Also I've informed Kate that she and Phil and any Scappoosian gang that wants to come should... anyone else from around here who might happen to read my blog (Tanya Kangas or Jocelyn Little) should come too!

A Aviatory Experience

A week ago today, Jeremy woke up with a cold. A couple days later I came down with it. Needless to say, last school week was extremely trying. Many rolls of toilet paper, bowls of chicken noodle soup, cups of soothing tea, and packets of saltine crackers later, today I woke up without a sore throat and a headache, and though we both have the sniffles/cough/unfortunate need to spew revolting matter from our mouths, we drove out to the air museum near McMinville to do a little post-illness adventuring.

The air museum is called the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. Unfortunately the Space part is under construction and won't be open until June, but we still had fun looking at the "air" display, looking at all the airplanes and helicopters outside, and wandering around the IMAX building, which shows 3-D movies (that we didn't view) and currently has the micminville school district science competitions displayed, which were super cute and fun to look at. Here we are at the end of our first weekend of the final term of our first year at PSU. Three cheers for firsts and lasts. I found out last week that my Spring classes are going to require a lot of rather involved homework assignments, so even with Fridays off, weekends are going to be rather work-intensive. However, thanks to Jeremy, I'm sure i won't spend the whole time indoors slaving away. This weekend we went hiking in the gorge not once, but twice, and he's already got a backpacking trip planned for next weekend. With no further a-do, I give you this weekends sights and scenes.

Almost Spring

We are in our final days of Winter Term here at Portland State. The March weather has been quite bipolar... blooming daffodils and warm wind replaced by black clouds, rain and cold weather, and then back again. It's all quite tolerable though, because this is our last week of class-- dead week isn't really dead week here-- and next week is finals. Which means Spring Break is soon upon us. We plan to go camping on the beach for part of it, because we (like so many Oregonians) think it's great fun to get shivery sandy wet while pretending it is excellent warm spring weather. Very pleasant indeed.

Our second to last project in our color theory class was an assignment based on two opposing words with a composition for each of them. For example, the words could be "alienation" and "community", and the artist would create (via color, mainly), abstract compositions that make these words apparent to the viewer. So here are mine and Jeremy's projects, I'll let you guess the words.

We went snowboarding a couple times in the past week, but didn't take pictures (we got some film footage last Thursday but I haven't downloaded any of it.) I'm hoping to get some spring boarding pics before the season wraps up, though. We've really enjoyed Meadows this winter, and it would be a shame to let the season escape without documenting some of it.

Color Theory: Depth

My ever-so-savvy sister Kate gave me the idea to post pictures of the art projects Jeremy and I have been creating in our art classes on the blog, so people can see what we do (besides snowboard and hike) and we can get feedback and comments on our 'work'.

I'm excited about this, but feel the need to make a small concession before I go exposing our art to critical eyes of loving family and friends. What the viewer has to realize is that we turn a lot of these projects in, and don't spend a ton of time creating masterpieces each and every time. Its just like writing papers; they can't all be inspired.

Right now we are taking Color Theory together. We use mostly acrylic paint on bristol board, and all of the compositions are non-representational (abstract); this forces us to use the color techniques we're learning in class to relate to the viewer, instead of relying on common association/recognition which can be used as a crutch in representational artwork.

The most recent project we completed was an assignment where we had to create a composition that had a deep space. The idea was to achieve this by using perspective, color saturation/desaturation, cool/warm contrasts, and anything else we could think of. Here were the outcomes:

Oneontona Trail and Triple Falls

Yesterday, like last Thursday, we went to the gorge after class to find a new hiking adventure; one not as populated. We are now well equipped to do so because Jeremy obtained a handy dandy top-map and hiking/backpacking book for this area. So our route of choice was to follow Horsetail Trail, up to Pony Falls. We ended up on the Oneontona Traill, and hiked up to Triple Falls instead, because we went to the wrong trail head. We didn't mind though. Jeremy says this was his favorite hiking trail yet. Also, we still believe in maps... and our ability to read them.

Jeremy had been doing a lot of research on popphoto.com, and other world wide web resources, learning the ropes of photography. He's still a little bummed that PSU only has a photography minor. But he's not letting it get the better of him. We're on the market for a new 20D, and meanwhile he's getting acomplished on his film camera (which takes good pictures: but nothing beats the convenience and speed of digital). One of these days I'll have some much higher quality pictures to post by the aspiring photographer. Meanwhile you get over-exposed and slightly pixelated pictures by yours truly.

So as you walk along this trail you can hear the sound of water. It gets louder and louder until you can see a deep chasm, (but still no water) and then after a really long time the trail breaks off and you can walk down to a little falls and see down the deep mossy-walled canyon the little creek created. Its hard to really see from these pictures. Apparently the mouth of this canyon is even cooler; another popular attraction we have yet to see.

After that detour we went back to the main trail and arrived at Triple Falls. Thats when we knew that yes, we were on the wrong trail for sure. So we took some pictures and headed back down because the sun was going down, and standing around water falls is a frigid pass-time.

So, what I said about the sun going down was true. When we got to the viewpoint just before the trial switchbacks down to the parking lot, the sun was setting and so we sat and took some pictures and watched it go. It was lovely, kind-of too cold for comfort.

Multnomah Falls

It's been so nice and sunny here lately, we decided to go hiking yesterday after class. Living on the East-side does have some benefits. We live close to the mountain and the Gorge. Which means our outdoor adventures are a little more convenient to partake in. Our hike yesterday brought us to Multnomah Falls.

Upon visiting the visitor's center, we learned it (The falls, not the center) hosts the most visits from people than any other "site" in Oregon. I find that hard to believe, considering Crater Lake is also in Oregon. Never the less there were a lot of people there for a Thursday afternoon, and for obvious reasons. It was quite spectacular. It always feels funny doing tourist-y things in an area you live, but it's not fair that only tourists get to see the amazing things we live amongst.

Happy Hikers

Multnomah Falls also has a cute little lodge with a restaurant upstairs. The whole thing is off of the old highway (now replaced with a freeway, 84), and the railroad runs right by too. After we had our fill of Multnomah Falls we followed the old windy highway back towards Portland. There are numerous other water falls all along it---an amazing amount of water comes out of these hills--and so we stopped periodically and took little mini jaunts out to see them. The road eventually leads all the way to the top of the ridge; you can see really far in either direction down the Columbia Gorge.

It has recently come to my attention how fun it is to browse through other people's blogs, and to witness from afar the daily happenings of their lives-- especially when they live in Switzerland or Alaska or Virginia-- So even though Jeremy and I live in Oregon, I though I'd start one up too. That was last October. And then a lot of other things happened and I forgot to post about all of them. I suppose the most documented episode in that gap of time was our trip to Hawaii with Jeremy's family, over Christmas Break. So I'll post a few of those pictures.

•Hello to our friends and family. Jeremy and I are about to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, and thought it about time to send out an update on our new life together. So here’s a short and brief version of our current lives: what we’ve done with ourselves this year, as well as what our plans for the immediate future are.
•Following our wedding day of October 14th we set off for Mexico to spend ten days soaking up the last of the summer sun. Despite the fact that I lost my wallet the day of the wedding, that Jeremy ruptured an ear-drum (or two) and had to visit a Mexican Pharmacia, (think bedroom with a cot in a kind man’s home) and that we ran out of pesos by the end of the trip and had to hike out to catch the bus to the airport, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Jeremy spent hours in the Ocean, I read roughly three novels, and got to brush up on my rather limited Spanish.
•We then moved into our first home, a little apartment downtown Klamath Falls. Jeremy worked construction for both of our fathers, and I continued working at the downtown Mermaid Garden Cafe within walking distance of home. Work aside, we spent a lot of time with our nearby families on the weekends and both took a couple classes at OIT so as not to completely fall back on our higher education.
•During the winter we frequented the nearby ski resorts, indulging in our fondness for snowboarding whenever we could find the time and the means. We spent the Thanksgiving Holiday in the bay area with Jeremy’s family—now I know where the man learned the art of loving his food, and eating it too-- and Christmas at my parents place on Agency Lake.
•Coming up at the end of this month, Jeremy and I will begin attending Portland State University to finish up our B.A. degrees. I am majoring in Graphic Design with a minor in advertising. Jeremy is currently enrolled as a Drawing and Painting major and a minor in photography, but may switch to Industrial Design next year. We’re both thrilled to be moving up to Portland for a couple of years.
